Sciatica Treatment

Sciatica is a condition that affects the sciatic nerve system, disrupting the signals of the muscles of the legs to the brain and the collection of sensory information from the lower limbs to be able to pass this back to the brain. This disruption is manifested in the weakness of the muscles of the legs, tingling or numbness or pain in the thighs and lower extremities. Sciatica treatment is sought when the pain becomes progressive and has lasted more than six days.

Pressure or damage to the sciatic nerve which causes inflammation, pain and discomfort is what is generally known as sciatica. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body and branches out to little nerves as it goes down the leg. The pain from sciatica radiates down this network of nerves to the feet. Sciatica may also be a symptom of some other medical problem. A herniated disc, spinal stenosis and spinal arthritis are some of the conditions that can bring about sciatica. Although sciatica affects all kinds of people, the condition is rare in young people below 30. For young people, sciatica treatment may just depend on finding the source of pain which may have been caused by a minor ciatica sos or a previously inflicted wound that affected the nerve or it may even come from even over-exertion.

Sciatica is not usually considered as a medical emergency and most people are able to recover from the condition without undergoing surgery. The nerve does not usually get permanently damaged, and recovery is expected within three weeks to sometimes about three months. If there is difficulty with the bowels or the function of the bladder, or numbness around the genitalia however, the condition should be treated as a medical emergency and the patient should consider the possibility of the need for surgery.

Your doctor will evaluate your symptoms and study your medical history to determine the sciatica treatment for you and if your condition should be considered serious. Sciatica may also be the result of a bone fracture, an infection or other degenerative diseases. If the pain grows progressive worse in a couple of days, or if it is hampering your daily activities, you should consult a doctor immediately. Bone spurs, herniated discs or nerves that are compressed, especially in the pelvis region can cause serious permanent damage if not remedied immediately.

Sciatica treatment and control includes simple home care. Basic preventive measures may be enough to keep sciatica symptoms from coming back. In other cases of sciatica, the immediate treatment is the recommendation of medications which will treat the inflammation. Mild exercises and activities are also recommended, while those that will exert pressure on the back should be avoided. Epidural injections are also used to provide pain relief for sufferers of sciatica if the oral medications are not working. When all possible remedies have been explored the condition may necessitate surgery to correct whatever is causing the pressure on the sciatic nerve. Anti-inflammatory drugs combined with mild exercises such as walking, stationary biking, and swimming can reduce or even totally eliminate the pain of sciatica.

A thorough discussion with your doctor or health practitioner is essential in treating your sciatica condition. With the proper treatment, a person suffering from sciatica has an excellent chance to get better or even fully recover.
